Our external life is organized based on two metrics. The first one is
the amount of resources available to us and the second is our immediate
social community. When conducive to our wishes, these two aspects lead
to our happiness. When not, they make us unhappy. Available resources
consist of our monetary wealth and things that can be purchased with the
help of money. Food, clothes, house, vehicles, entertainment, and other
items that increase our comfort level belong to this category. Our
social network consists of our spouse, children, brothers, sisters,
parents, other family members, friends, extended friends, and
acquaintances. If there is no dearth of resources and if our community
supports us, we feel happy. Similarly, our internal life also has two
wheels – our body and our mind. For individual well being, these two
wheels need to be in good shape. Physical illnesses and mental
afflictions lead to a confused and unhealthy internal state. A healthy
body and a balanced mind lead to internal contentment and happiness.
Resources, community, body, and mind – these constitute the four wheels
of the chariot of our life. To keep them healthy and conducive and
therefore well functioning, a healthy and balanced perspective is
indispensable. In this sense, we may see our perspective as the all
important charioteer. When steered by a negative perspective, the
chariot of life goes haywire and life becomes full of sorrow and
confusion. We have only the hellish aspects of our life to lose as we
try and rid ourselves of a selfish and narrow minded perspective. An
evolved perspective and a dedication to our ideals will lead to
individual, familial, as well as social happiness. Further more, the
right perspective is also the way to fulfill our life goal, the way to
satisfy the needs of the era, and the way to evolve from a subhuman
existence into a super human one.
