Swami Vivekananda saw that in India, ascetics and monks had become synonym of indolence and they neither did good to themselves nor to the nation. After the demise of his Master (Guru), Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa, he founded Ramkrishna Mission, whose goal was not to build monasteries but to serve the mankind. His brother disciples asked, “Thus, how shall we attain our goal of worship and self-realization? This is the work of social reformers
only.”
Swamiji replied, “This only is our real worship. Serving the sick, removal of ignorance, giving satisfaction to the poor – if we could perform these three works successfully, God would be equally happy with us, as He would have been happy after we had practiced
penance for years in the Himalayas.”
